When you think of iconic Aussie wines, Jacob’s Creek is usually one of the first names that comes to mind. These days it is poured at Wimbledon, toasted at the Australian Open, and enjoyed in more than 80 countries. But the brand’s story begins in a much smaller setting — alongside a quiet creek in South Australia.

From a Creek to the Cellar

The journey starts in 1847 when Johann Gramp, a German immigrant, planted his first vines along the banks of Jacob’s Creek in the Barossa Valley. What began as a local vineyard slowly grew into something far bigger, but for more than a century the name Jacob’s Creek stayed small. It was not until 1976 that the first bottle officially carrying the Jacob’s Creek label was released. It sold for around five dollars and became an overnight success.

Going Global

That affordable bottle struck a chord with everyday drinkers. Jacob’s Creek built its reputation on being approachable and reliable rather than fancy or exclusive. As more vintages rolled out, the brand gained recognition overseas and became one of Australia’s most successful wine exports. Today, Jacob’s Creek is available in more than 60 countries, making it one of the world’s most familiar wine labels.

Serving Up Centre Court

One of the most memorable moments in the brand’s history came when Jacob’s Creek became the official wine sponsor of the Australian Open. For years, spectators sipped Barossa Valley wine while watching tennis superstars battle it out under the summer sun. The partnership put Jacob’s Creek firmly in the spotlight and showed that wine could be both sophisticated and part of everyday Aussie culture. The brand later appeared on the world stage again through sponsorship of Wimbledon, proving its global reach.

More Than Just a Bottle

What makes Jacob’s Creek stand out is that it has never lost its easy-going charm. It still offers great wine at a price most people can enjoy, while also experimenting with premium ranges that showcase the best of the Barossa Valley. The story of Jacob’s Creek is not just about wine; it is about how a modest little creek gave its name to a global brand that Aussies can proudly call their own.
